Purpose and Expectations

Expat Expert is a community for individuals discussing the legal, financial, and practical aspects of relocating to, working in, or retiring abroad. This includes conversations around tax residency, compliance, estate planning, immigration law, and international finance.

We welcome contributions from all members who engage in good faith and with respect for others. By participating, you agree to follow these Community Standards and acknowledge the discretionary authority of our moderation team. These standards apply to all areas of the platform, including posts, comments, private messages reported to moderators, profile content, and any direct interactions with other members.

General Principles

If you follow these principles, you are unlikely to encounter moderation issues:

  • Maintain a respectful, professional environment for members and visitors
  • Promote the exchange of ideas and information in a thoughtful and responsible manner
  • “Don’t be a jerk” — adapted from Wil Wheaton
  • “Be excellent to each other” — Bill and Ted
  • Keep in mind that your audience may include professionals, expatriates, and legal practitioners, and that your posts may be read months or years after they are written
  • Assume good intent from other members unless there is clear evidence otherwise. Many questions that seem obvious to experienced expats are genuinely confusing to newcomers.
  • Back your positions with facts, sources, or personal experience. Stating something confidently is not the same as it being correct.

Minimum Conduct Standards

This list is not exhaustive. Conduct may still be subject to moderation even if not specifically addressed here. Moderators may remove content or terminate accounts at their discretion without prior notice. Their instructions must be followed promptly.

General Conduct

  • No harassment, threats, or discriminatory remarks of any kind
  • Personal attacks, name-calling, or hostile language will not be tolerated
  • No sexually explicit, obscene, or otherwise inappropriate content
  • Do not provoke or bait others into arguments
  • Avoid inflammatory threads such as “Country X is corrupt” or similar unconstructive framing
  • Refrain from prolonged, circular arguments that add nothing to the discussion
  • Political content is discouraged unless directly relevant to the legal or financial implications of relocation. Stay focused and factual.
  • Do not pile on. If a post has already been challenged or corrected, one response is enough.
  • Sarcasm and condescension are not constructive. If you disagree, say so clearly and move on.

Accounts and Identity

  • Only one account per person, unless otherwise approved by staff
  • Do not impersonate others, including professionals, government officials, or other members
  • Do not create accounts to evade bans, deleted posts, or prior moderation actions
  • Accounts found to be operated by bots or automated tools will be permanently removed without notice
  • Profile information must be honest and not intended to mislead other members about your background or credentials

Content Quality

  • No spam, duplicate posts, or clickbait titles
  • Do not post “Google it yourself” responses or paste unedited AI-generated text as your own contribution
  • Avoid posts that add no value to the conversation (e.g., “same here,” “lol,” or emojis alone)
  • No link shorteners (e.g., bit.ly) without moderator approval
  • Choose the correct forum section when starting a thread
  • When sharing information about a specific country or jurisdiction, state clearly whether it is based on personal experience, professional knowledge, or secondary research. Outdated information can cause real harm.
  • Do not quote large blocks of text without adding meaningful commentary or context
  • Thread titles should accurately describe the content. Misleading or vague titles may be edited by moderators.

Promotion, Solicitation, and Commercial Activity

  • No advertising or promotion of external websites, services, or content
  • Self-promotion (YouTube channels, blogs, paid services) is not allowed. Linking to social media profiles is permitted only in designated areas or profile pages.
  • No affiliate links, referral codes, or monetized posts of any kind
  • No fundraising, donation requests, or offers of free services used to generate leads
  • Marketplace discussions (e.g., selling services or property abroad) are only permitted in clearly designated areas
  • Members who are licensed professionals (attorneys, CPAs, financial advisors) may identify themselves as such but may not solicit clients in threads. Inquiries should be directed to their profile or designated areas.

Prohibited Content

  • No discussions or instructions related to:
    • Tax evasion, document forgery, or bypassing immigration laws
    • Circumventing digital security, including VPN-based content restrictions in prohibited jurisdictions
    • Hacking, piracy, or illegal downloads
    • Moving assets offshore for the purpose of concealing them from tax authorities or legal proceedings
    • Obtaining residency, citizenship, or documentation through fraudulent means
  • Users must comply with applicable local, national, and international laws
  • This platform is governed by applicable laws of the United States and any relevant jurisdiction applicable to the user
  • Posts that appear designed to extract sensitive personal or financial information from other members will be removed and may result in a permanent ban

Privacy and Data Protection

  • Do not post private or personally identifiable information (PII) about anyone without clear consent
  • Do not share personal information about minors (under 18), including your own children
  • Use caution when sharing your own details, especially financial or immigration information. This is a public forum.
  • Do not screenshot or republish private messages, even partially, without the explicit consent of the other party
  • Do not attempt to identify or “dox” anonymous or pseudonymous members

Moderation Policy

  • Do not publicly dispute moderation actions. Use private messaging to raise concerns with @Admin or @ExpatExpert.
  • Do not “backseat moderate” by calling out posts as spam or off-topic in the thread. Use the report function instead.
  • Do not repost content that has been removed or attempt to revive locked discussions
  • Moderators may not have access to private messages unless flagged or under specific legal or regulatory circumstances
  • Repeated minor violations carry the same weight as a single serious one. Patterns of borderline behavior will be treated as a conduct issue.
  • Moderation decisions are final. Appeals submitted respectfully through private channels will be reviewed; public pressure campaigns will not.
  • Members who are removed retain no right to archived posts or account data beyond what is required by applicable law.
